The role of a mentor in the We Give NorCal program is absolutely vital — mentors are the heart of the transformation we aim to create. Here's what they do:
💡 Guide and Inspire
Mentors serve as trusted advisors who help foster youth navigate their personal and professional development. They offer wisdom, encouragement, and real-life insight that can’t be found in textbooks.
🧭 Provide Direction
Many of our youth have aged out of the foster care system without strong role models or stable support. Mentors help them set goals, stay accountable, and build confidence as they explore their passions and career paths.
🤝 Build Relationships
Mentors don’t just talk to our youth — they build genuine connections with them. This relationship often becomes the foundation for trust, healing, and hope. For many, it’s the first time they’ve had someone consistently in their corner.
🔑 Open Doors
Mentors introduce youth to their networks — connecting them to career opportunities, internships, or even just a friendly contact in a field they’re curious about. In a world where “who you know” matters, this is life-changing.
💬 Support During Internships
During the paid internship phase, mentors check in weekly to help youth reflect on what they’re learning, solve challenges, and stay motivated. They’re a sounding board and a safe space.
